Innovative technologies for in situ bioremediation of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAH) are efficient investments of capital and energy resources. Isodetect is a consortial partner in the development of enhanced natural attenuation of CAH by methane amendments. While biodegradation is stimulated by multiple admixtures of methane, repeated isotopic monitoring validates the success of the technology. Isotope measurements provide direct evidentce for biological activity, in contrast to concentration measurements which might diminish by dilution as well as by biodegradation. Moreover, isotopic signatures of CAH degradation end-products such as methane or carbon dioxide also provides strong that successful enhanced bioremediation has taken place.
